PENTECOST ~ The POWER of The HOLY SPIRIT FLOWING into Their GREAT PASSION for The RISEN LORD JESUS CHRIST !

What ACTUALLY happened on the Day of Pentecost ?

To find out, we must go to the GREEK BYZANTINE manuscripts and read this passage literally, word for word.

That means we must take the Greek words at face value with their given definitions.  That is, we must clear away the interpretations  of the translators and rely upon just the simple translation of the words.

And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one placeActs 2:1

Acts 2:1  Καὶ εν τω συμπληρουσθαι τὴν ημέραν της πεντηκοστης σαν  απαντες ομοθυμαδὸν επὶ τὸ αυτό

Glory to GOD ! This verse is GOOD even the way it stands, but there is even MORE to discover in this verse. Here’s the stark literal translation without smoothing over the awkward English.

And while --- during the time ---

the DAY of PENTECOST

to be fulfilled,

they were absolutely all unified

of the SAME PASSION

[ moving ] towards the same [ purpose ].

+  +  +

The “with one accord” is implied of course, with the “absolutely all unified” literal translation of απαντες ( hapantes ) .

But the NEXT phrase , “ of the SAME PASSION”  is much stronger than “accord” . [The Greek word is "homothumadon" from   “homo-“ = same , and  “thumos” = passion, as if breathing hard *** See below.  ]

Here’s the difference in meaning:

A Brotherhood in churches can reach an accord, as can warring nations. Committees often function by a consensus.

That kind of accord is NOT “thumos” , a passion. A natual-minded “accord” is NOT what occurred on the Day of PENTECOST.

Rather, a PASSIONATE desire for the Victorious LORD JESUS CHRIST  beating in every soul’s bosom  is what occurred.

That PASSIONATE  desire  towards HIM+  united the 120 persons gathered in the Upper Room on the Day of Pentecost.

On the DAY OF PENTECOST there was GREAT PASSION, a great hunger for The Risen LORD JESUS with Whom+ they had spent 40 days.

The 120 gathered in the Upper Room had seen HIM+ crucified, dead , and buried.  Yet, HE+ vanquished death, hell , and the grave and walked and talked and vanished among them, at will !

Their SOLE aim was to be with their RESURRECTED LORD JESUS over Whom+ death had no more dominion, GLORY TO GOD !

NOW they  knew  HE+  had the POWER !

NOW they  knew  the satan did not. The evil one could only  lure and lie.

NOW those disciples were NOT afraid of death. The LORD JESUS CHRIST had conquered it for them.

Even so, just before His+ Glorious Ascension, HE+ told them to WAIT in Jerusalem until they be endued with POWER from on High.

Luke 24:46  And [ JESUS ] said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved CHRIST to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:

Luke 24:47  And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in HIS+ name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.   Luke 24:48  And ye are witnesses of these things.

Luke 24:49  And, behold, I+ send the promise of My+ FATHER upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem,

until ye be endued with POWER from on High.

+  +  +

So they waited with great PASSION, with great EXCITEMENT, with great CONFIDENCE that HE+ was going to do something GREAT for them !

They did NOT know HE+ was going to do something great TO them !

They did not know HE+ was going to do something great THROUGH them !

The LORD JESUS sent the HOLY SPIRIT from The FATHER to them and the world was turned upside down !

When the HOLY SPIRIT baptized them, over-whelming them with HIMSELF, they burst forth from that Upper Room speaking in glorious tongues,  not babble, but languages which they had never learned.

Others, marveling, readily understood them.

Jerusalem was aroused ! The vast multitude of listeners heard the Apostle Peter preach a fiery message, fully under the anointing of the HOLY SPIRIT.

And THAT day, about 3,000 souls were baptized into CHRIST JESUS, also receiving the Gift of the HOLY SPIRIT !

Then Peter said unto them,

Repent, and be baptized every one of you

in the name of JESUS CHRIST

 for the remission of sins,

and ye shall receive

the Gift of The HOLY SPIRIT.

Acts 2:38

Acts 2:39  For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as THE LORD our GOD shall call.  Acts 2:40  And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.

Acts 2:41  Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

YES ! That  is how the Church did evangelism . . . direct preaching, direct conviction, and direct repentances which brought forth the direct conversion of souls unto CHRIST.   How LONG did that take ?

.  .  . and the SAME DAY

there were added unto them

about three thousand souls !

This is WHAT the DAY of PENTECOST brought us.

This is the pattern of HOW we are to do evangelism.

This is WHY we observe the DAY of Pentecost.

It is the finale of the PASSOVER season

. . . . . .  just as The FATHER intended it to be !

Now the Fruits do follow.

Glory to GOD in the Highest !

And on earth, Peace, Goodwill towards men !

***  The Greek word THUMOS , as part of “HomoThumadon”

Thayer's Greek Lexicon from https://biblehub.com/greek/2372.htm

STRONGS NT 2372: θυμός

θυμός, θυμο, (from θύω to rush along or on, be in a heat, breathe violently; hence, Plato correctly says, Cratyl., p. 419 e., θυμός πό τς θυσεως καί ζεσεως τς ψυχς;

accordingly it signifies both the spirit panting as it were in the body, and the rage with which the man pants and swells) (from Homer down), the Sept. often for אַף anger, and חֵמָה excandescentia; also for חָרון aestus. In the N. T.:

1. passion, angry heat (excandescentia, Cicero, Tusc. 4, 9, 21), anger forthwith boiling up and soon subsiding again

(ργή, on the other hand, denotes indignation which has arisen gradually and become more settled; (cf. (Plato) deff. 415 e. θυμός. ρμή βίαιος νευ

2372 thymós (from thyō, "rush along, getting heated up, breathing violently," cf. J. Thayer) – properly, passion-driven behavior, i.e. actions emerging out of strong impulses (intense emotion).
